I’m Jacqueline Hung!

I'm a recent PhD graduate from Queen's University, Canada, and am a current postdoctoral researcher at the Woodwell Climate Research Center. During my graduate studies, I studied the effects of climate warming on soil biogeochemistry and greenhouse gases in the Canadian High Arctic. I've been fortunate enough to have conducted field research in a variety of places, including the Amazon rainforest and underwater on Caribbean reefs, but studying the Northern landscapes of my home country that were being directly impacted by climate change struck a chord with me.

The first time I really understood the impact of my research in the Canadian Arctic was spending when I was able to spend time in the community and volunteer at the local school. My research on Melville Island, Nunavut was geographically far from any nearby communities, but in meeting with and speaking to Inuit, I was able to hear first hand the impact of climate warming on their livelihoods and ancestral lands. Seeing the connection that the Inuit and other Indigenous peoples have to the land reminds me how important the ongoing research is in order to attempt to mitigate some of the changes.

Nowadays, my research takes me to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in Alaska, where I am part of a team looking to understand the impact of climate warming, permafrost thaw, and wildfire on the terrestrial and hydrological systems.

I am also most comfortable in or around water - I love exploring new waterways on my paddleboard or underwater by scuba diving.

When I'm not in the field, I can usually be found on the trails hiking with my dog. I am also most comfortable in or around water - I love exploring new waterways on my paddleboard or underwater by scuba diving.

I hope to continue conducting polar research that has an impact on policies and decision-making.
